The 2025 Volta Regional Renewable Energy Challenge for Senior High Schools, Technical, and TVET institutions came alive at Ola Girls Senior High School in Ho on Tuesday with a powerful call to action for innovation, sustainability, and youth empowerment.

Hosted under the theme “Sustainable Energy and a Healthier Future”, the challenge brought together student innovators, educators, and policy leaders to spotlight practical, student-driven renewable energy solutions aligned with Ghana’s developmental agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In a keynote address that electrified the gathering, the Deputy Director for Renewable Energy Regulation at the Energy Commission, Frederick Appiah, unveiled an ambitious roadmap to move student innovations from concept to commercialisation.

He emphasised the Commission’s commitment to long-term investment in student ingenuity.

“This initiative is not just about rewarding creativity—it’s about providing a platform for real impact,” Mr. Appiah stated.

“We are going beyond the competition. The winning team will have the opportunity to engage with Aschaffen University in Germany, where knowledge will be deepened, ideas refined, and innovation transcribed into meaningful solutions.”

He announced the Commission’s plans to institutionalise a dedicated fund to support all finalist projects, regardless of whether they win, with the aim of nurturing high-potential ideas to maturity.

“Our vision is to build an ecosystem where industries, innovators, and developers come together. Through a Project Defence Forum, we will allow real-time partnerships, investments, and commercialisation.

“And the returns—every benefit—must go back to the students and schools that created the solutions,” he stressed.

The conference room at Ola Girls SHS, transformed into a hub of innovation, saw students presenting clean energy technologies—from solar dehydrators and biogas models to hybrid systems tailored for rural applications.

In his official welcome and opening address, the Volta Regional Director of Education, Francis Agbemadi, highlighted the region’s growing role in the national science and innovation space.

“Though we do not yet have a dedicated STEM school, the Volta Region continues to earn national recognition—not only for academic excellence but for our students’ contributions to sustainable innovation,” he said.

Mr. Agbemadi praised the Energy Commission’s leadership in nurturing critical thinking and practical problem-solving among young people, describing the Renewable Energy Challenge as “a transformative platform preparing students to lead Ghana’s future in energy and environmental sustainability.”

He encouraged students to embrace the opportunity as a journey, not only of competition, but of collaboration and capacity-building.

Also speaking at the event, the Headmistress of Ola Girls SHS, Madam Benedictor Agbezudor, commended the Commission’s consistent support and mentorship, calling it a “commendable investment in the future of Ghana’s youth.”

“I urge all participating students to take this moment seriously. These are the seeds that will grow into your careers, your businesses, and your legacy,” she noted.

This year’s challenge also aligns with four key SDGs: SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being, SDG 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation, SDG 7 – Affordable and Clean Energy and SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth.

Participants were encouraged not only to showcase their projects with confidence but also to learn from one another, appreciate diverse perspectives, and build networks that could fuel future collaborations.

“Today is your day,” Mr. Appiah told the students. “You’ve worked hard. You’ve created something from nothing. Now express yourselves boldly. Compete with excellence. But most importantly—innovate for impact.”

The 2025 Renewable Energy Challenge is another milestone in the Energy Commission’s mission to decentralise innovation, democratize opportunity, and prepare young Ghanaians to lead the transition toward a cleaner, healthier, and more resilient energy future.
