Elikplim Akurugu secures streetlights from Mahama to improve safety in Dome-Kwabenya

The Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, Hon. Elikplim Akurugu, has received a significant consignment of streetlights and LED bulbs from President John Dramani Mahama to help address the longstanding issue of inadequate street lighting in the constituency.

Through the Ministry of Energy and Green Transitions, the Dome-Kwabenya constituency has received delivery of 200 units of 150-watt LED streetlights, complete with arms and accessories, as well as 5,000 units of 13-watt LED bulbs, 1,000 units of 9-watt LED bulbs, and 1,000 units of 6-watt LED bulbs.

The supply forms part of President Mahama’s broader “Light Up Ghana” initiative, a national programme aimed at boosting public safety, driving local economic activity, and improving community life through better street illumination.

Speaking on the donation, Hon. Elikplim Akurugu said, “This gesture shows President Mahama’s unwavering commitment to community safety and development. It is also a timely response to the concerns I raised about the dangerous gaps in our street lighting network.”

Earlier this year, on February 17th, the MP led an inspection tour of streetlights across the principal streets of Dome-Kwabenya. The tour revealed that out of an estimated 1,500 streetlights required to light up the constituency’s 84 kilometers of main roads, only about 500 have been installed and just 57 are currently functional.

“Far too many areas in Dome-Kwabenya are in darkness at night, which poses risks to residents and hampers economic activity,” Hon. Akurugu explained. “With these new streetlights and bulbs, we are taking a concrete step to change that.”

She further assured constituents that she will collaborate closely with the Ga East Municipal Assembly and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to ensure swift and efficient installation, starting with the most critical and densely populated communities.

The installation will be rolled out in phases as part of a broader plan to fully illuminate the constituency, promoting safer streets and a more secure environment for all.

“This is just the beginning. I remain committed to ensuring that every corner of Dome-Kwabenya is safe, well-lit, and conducive for families and businesses to thrive,” Elikplim added.
