Economist and political analyst, Dr Theo Acheampong is skeptical about the MP for Assin Central Kennedy Agyapong winning the ongoing New Patriotic Party (NPP) primaries.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile, the political analyst cited the outcome of polls by some renowned organizations prior to the primaries.

He is therefore certain that there is no way “Ken [Agyapong] will be able to pull a surprise.”

“Both of the candidates have gone around all of the regions and constituencies to engage with delegates and they sort of know what the issues are.

It is not to say that delegates will not vote for other candidates beyond Dr Bawumia. If you look at the polling that has been done by various organisations, it’s quite clear that Kennedy would be able to get some numbers,” he told Samson Lardy Anyenini on Saturday.

While acknowledging Mr Agyapong’s appeal, especially among grassroots supporters, Dr. Acheampong pointed out that in the context of the primaries, the focus is on selecting the candidate with the best chance of winning the general election.

A position, he believes that among the NPP, Dr. Bawumia appears to be the front-runner.

“Some peg him [Kennedy Agyapong] at 20 to 25 percent, but that is not going to be enough to get him over the line,” the economist emphasised.

He further added, “As far as I am aware and from where I sit, I think that Dr. Bawumia would win the primaries.”

Delegates of the NPP are voting to select a candidate who will carry the party’s banner in the upcoming 2024 general elections.

The presidential race features a diverse field of contenders, including Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, former Minister of Agriculture Dr Owusu Akoto Afriyie, and former Member of Parliament for Mampong, Francis Addai-Nimoh.
