The Ministry of Education has introduced a major reform to the country’s tertiary education framework, capping the validity of university charters at 10 years.

The move marks a shift from the previous arrangement, where charters were either indefinite or had loosely defined terms.

The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, announced the policy change during a working visit to Wisconsin International University College.

According to him, the revised system aims to strengthen academic accountability, enforce higher education standards, and facilitate regular reviews of institutional performance.

The policy, according to the Minister, is to ensure that universities in the country remain responsive, transparent, and aligned with national and global academic benchmarks.

In a related development, Mr Iddrisu also reiterated the need for the urgent passage of a national broadcasting law.

He stressed that such legislation is essential to safeguarding media freedom while promoting ethical standards and responsible content regulation within the broadcasting space.

The proposed broadcasting framework, he said, will provide the necessary legal backbone to ensure the media operates independently yet responsibly in a fast-evolving digital environment.
