Significant challenges hinder pursuing quality education in Madagascar and Agalakope, within the Kwahu Afram Plains North District, as children routinely engage in farming and fishing during school hours.
Despite the constitutional mandate for free compulsory primary education, many parents in these communities prioritize agricultural labour over schooling for their children. This practice has led to a noticeable decline in enrollment and student absenteeism.
Moreover, children residing behind Volta Lake face additional hurdles. The need for canoes prevents them from accessing school altogether. Families that do possess canoes often prioritize fishing, further limiting educational opportunities for these young learners.
During a recent visit to Madagascar, it was observed that despite efforts by the district education directorate to adjust school hours, pupil attendance remained sparse. Many children were found assisting their parents on farms instead of attending classes.
Raphael Kpoha, the dedicated head teacher of Madagascar’s school, highlighted the urgent need for infrastructure improvements and support from stakeholders. He emphasized the hazardous conditions of the deteriorating school building and the challenges of commuting due to the lack of adequate transport options.
Local educators and community leaders have called for interventions such as a school feeding program to incentivize attendance and sustain interest in education.
They argue that achieving positive learning outcomes in these remote areas will remain a daunting task without such support.
The plight of these communities underscores the critical role of parental commitment to education and government investment in educational infrastructure in realizing the academic goals outlined in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4.
