Economist and political risk specialist Dr Theo Acheampong appointed Technical Advisor at the Ministry of Finance

Economist and political risk specialist Dr Theophilus Acheampong has been appointed a Technical Advisor at the Ministry of Finance, bringing to the role a deep well of expertise that has shaped policy conversations in Ghana and beyond for more than a decade.

A familiar voice in Ghana’s media landscape, Dr Acheampong has long contributed sharp, evidence-based analysis to national discussions on the economy, public finance, and governance.

Many believe that his transition into a formal advisory role is a natural extension of the work he has already been doing in boardrooms, classrooms, and international policy circles.

Dr Acheampong’s career spans over 15 years at the intersection of energy and extractives, public finance, and political risk.

He has delivered or co-led more than 60 consultancy projects across Africa and globally, advising development finance institutions, international development agencies, private equity firms, and multinational corporations. His work has focused on economic and financial modelling, integrity risk assessments, and sustainable development, consistently helping decision-makers navigate complex landscapes with clarity.

Academically, he holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Aberdeen, where he specialised in upstream fiscal regimes and energy systems modelling. He also earned an MSc in Energy Economics and Finance from the same institution, after completing a BSc in Chemical Engineering at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). He is currently pursuing an MSc in Taxation at the University of Oxford’s St Hugh’s College, adding further depth to his competence in public finance and fiscal policy.

In the classroom, he serves as an Adjunct Professor at the Universities of Dundee and Aberdeen in the UK, as well as the University of Ghana and the University of Energy and Natural Resources. His academic commitments reflect a long-standing passion for shaping thought leadership and grooming the next generation of economic and policy professionals.

Dr Acheampong’s influence extends across global policy platforms. He is a non-resident fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations (Germany) and the IMANI Centre for Policy and Education (Ghana).

He also serves on the boards of Natural Resource Charter Limited (NRGI-UK) and the African Council (UK). In the private sector, he is Head of Research and Markets at the Critical Minerals Africa Group (CMAG), a platform linking African governments, investors, and global players in the critical minerals value chain.

Beyond his technical depth, Theo has earned a reputation as a clear, compelling communicator. His analysis has been featured in leading global outlets, including the BBC, The Economist, The Wall Street Journal, and Bloomberg. His publications cut across journals, edited volumes, and commissioned reports, often distilling complex economic issues into practical insights for policymakers and investors.

With this appointment, the Ministry of Finance brings on board a professional whose career has been built on bridging technical rigour with real-world applicability.

Dr Acheampong’s blend of academic excellence, advisory experience, and global exposure positions him to add significant value as Ghana navigates evolving economic and fiscal dynamics.
