The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has issued a response to allegations by the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) alleging ECG’s purported non-compliance with load management instructions.

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is taking a bold step to strengthen power reliability and stability in Obuasi and its environs with the construction of a new 33 kV feeder.

When completed, this new feeder will connect a 50/66 MVA power transformer being installed by GRIDCo in Obuasi.‎

The construction, which began on Sunday, July 20, 2025, will also enable ECG to receive and distribute power from the new GRIDCo transformer, thereby unlocking greater stability and supply capacity for homes, hospitals, businesses, and essential service providers in Obuasi.

Engineers from Ash Sub-Transmission and technical partners from KOMFATHER ELECTRICALS were on-site on Saturday for final assessments and mobilisation.

It follows weeks of collaboration between GRIDCo and ECG to address persistent voltage fluctuations and supply interruptions that have affected livelihoods in the municipality.

At ECG, we do not just see cables and circuits—we see people,” says Ing. Edward Asare, Network Maintenance Team Leader, Ashanti Sub-Transmission.

“This feeder project is more than a line; it’s a lifeline for Obuasi’s future growth and dignity. We are determined to ensure that residents no longer have to worry about an unstable power supply,” he added.

The new 33 kV feeder will provide a dedicated channel for transmission of electricity from the upgraded transformer, helping to relieve load on existing feeders, reduce outages, and improve voltage levels across key demand areas.

Residents and businesses in Obuasi have long called for permanent solutions to inconsistent power supply.

This project is a direct response from ECG to address their concerns.

Reliable electricity is not only a luxury but a necessity needed for the revival and expansion of the economy of the mining town of Obuasi.

Such an investment from ECG in the area of improved power infrastructure demonstrates a long-term commitment to community resilience, economic opportunity, and quality of life.

Meanwhile, ECG has assured the public work will be executed with minimal disruption to existing supply.

Upon completion, the integration of the new transformer and feeder will mark a major turning point in the region’s energy outlook.

The initiative is part of a broader regional power improvement agenda spearheaded by ECG Ashanti and its partners to build a more robust and responsive distribution network across Ghana.
