The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has warned the public against engaging in the illegal act of guarantor contracting.

According to the Commission, the development of some voters acting as ‘Guarantor Contractors’ is increasingly becoming a worrying act and needs to be nipped in the bud before the canker spreads further.

A statement from the Commission sited by Happy 98.9 FM read, “The Electoral Commission’s attention has been drawn to a development at some registration centers where certain people are acting as ‘Guarantor Contractors’.

The Commission which is vehemently against the act and seeks to carry out a faultless registration process has pledged to hand over such culprits to security agencies to face the full wrath of the law.

“People who commit such an offence are liable on summary conviction to a fine of not more than five hundred (500) penalty units or to a term of imprisonment of not more than two (2) years or both,” the statement furthered.

The Constitutional Instrument (CI) 91 states that a registered voter who is the applicant’s parent, sibling, spouse, guardian and others are the only persons who can serve as a guarantor.
