DVLA to roll out digitised accident reports, new number plates and 24-hour services

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has announced that it is set to introduce a series of major innovations aimed at modernising its operations and improving service delivery nationwide.

These include digitised accident reporting, digitised international driver’s permits, a fully securitised digital vehicle number plate system, and expanded 24-hour service operations, beginning January 2026.

Delivering an address on behalf of the Chief Executive during the opening ceremony of the 2025 Annual Residential Delegates Congress of the DVLA Workers Union on Friday, December 5, Deputy Director Kwasi Bona Otuo Serebour said the Authority is committed to placing customers at the centre of its transformation agenda.

He revealed that DVLA officers will no longer write accident reports on loose sheets of paper, explaining that the upcoming digital system will ensure accuracy, proper grammar, structure, and secure documentation.

New digitised international driver’s permits and international vehicle permits will also replace handwritten entries that do not meet global standards.

The Deputy Director further announced that DVLA will roll out a securitised digital vehicle license plate system from January 2026, supported by nationwide sensitisation.

“From the first working day of January 2026, Ghanaians will begin to see the new number plates we are introducing,” he said, adding that teams have already toured the country to consult stakeholders and explain the upcoming changes.

He also disclosed that DVLA is working to translate the Highway Code into multiple local languages to improve road safety education, while plans are underway to introduce instant printing of driver’s licences in key stations.

Additionally, from January 2026, all regional offices and all offices in Greater Accra are set to operate 24 hours daily to allow clients easier access to DVLA services.

Mr. Otuo Serebour noted that the Authority has already introduced several efficiency tools, including SMS reminders for licence renewals, SMS prompts for roadworthiness certificates (to be added soon), and verification systems now accessible to both Android and iOS users.

He praised the workforce for helping the DVLA win at least 10 awards since February 2025, emphasising unity, discipline and customer service as the pillars of continued success.

“Management is committed to fostering a productive working environment and providing opportunities for career growth. Continue to shine and be the reason someone respects the DVLA,” he said.

The ceremony was attended by the Chief Labour Officer, the Executive Secretary of the National Labour Commission, representatives from the DVLA, NCA Staff Association and other dignitaries.
