The Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana (C-DAG) has called on the government to urgently invest in alternative transport systems to reduce pressure on the country’s roads and help curb the rising incidence of road crashes.
In a press statement issued on Wednesday and signed by the Central Regional Chairman, Kwesi Arhin, and the National Chairman, William Osei, the association stressed that reviving and expanding railway and water transport—particularly in the Ashanti, Eastern, Central and Western Regions—would significantly ease congestion and prevent avoidable accidents.
“Roads are currently under immense strain due to heavy vehicle traffic. Investing in railways and water transport will not only reduce congestion but also protect the lives of drivers, passengers, and other road users,” the statement said.
It added that the overreliance on road transport places undue pressure on drivers, often forcing them into risky situations.
“Drivers are often forced to take risks because road transport is overloaded. Alternative systems would ease our burden and improve safety across the country,” the statement noted.
C-DAG pointed out that the lack of diversified transport options has contributed to the increasing rate of road crashes, particularly involving commercial vehicles.
The Greater Accra Regional Chairman, Nii Ashi, said the association remains committed to promoting road safety, driver welfare and responsible transport practices, but stressed that government action is critical.
“We remain committed to promoting road safety, driver welfare, and responsible transport practices. But the Government must play its part in creating a safer transport ecosystem,” he said.
The association’s appeal comes amid growing concern over excessive speeding, long driving hours and sales pressures on drivers, factors that have been linked to recent road accidents across the country.
