The Member of Parliament for Korle Klottey in the Greater Accra region, Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings has in partnership with local agricultural advocacy organisation, Agrihouse Foundation, has organised an intensive one-day training workshop in snail farming for 25 youths at Osu in Accra.
The participants who were drawn from Accra and its environs were taken through various aspects of snail farming, and were presented with starter packs and certificates donated by the MP.
The programme, Phase II of the (It’s Possible) monthly skills training programme, was implemented a few years ago under the partnership.
Some of the topics discussed include nature of snails, snail farming systems, practical hints for snail farmers, snail structures, processing, marketing and branding.
Each participants is expected to set up and grow their own commercially viable snail farms.
There is a scheduled free, monthly training programme with starter packs on the last Friday of every month, with a focus on snail, rabbit and mushroom farming.
Speaking during the programme, Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings expressed her appreciation to the management of Agrihouse Foundation for their efforts to train the youths in agriculture which she said is the backbone of the Ghanaian economy.
She said Agrihouse Foundation has done a lot in the agric sector as they have trained hundreds of women, youths and also persons living with disabilities who are currently doing well in their various fields.
She noted that she has personally done a lot of work together with the foundation.
Dr Zanetor said that it was exciting working on the project for the past years and it was to ensure that the programme achieved its target, adding that they don’t want the participants to fail and that is the reason they are giving them starter packs in the form of snails so that they can go home and start work right away.
Concerning her passion in Agric, Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings said she was introduced to agric during her high school days and that her love for agric has since grown.
She said the determination shown by the participants was a clear indication that they will succeed.
.“This is something that we are doing for our own country and our communities to support people in order to become self-sufficient as they can make money to make life easier for them,” said Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings.
The Korle Klottey MP charged the participants to work hard so they can have good stories to share to encourage others.
She told them not to hesitate to knock on her door when they need additional support.
