DR Congo endorses Trans Africa Tourism and Unity Campaign to boost visa-free travel across continent

The Trans Africa Tourism and Unity Campaign, a Pan-African initiative advocating for visa-free travel across Africa, has received a major boost with the official endorsement of the Government of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

This endorsement brings the total number of supporting countries to eight, signalling growing momentum for the campaign, which seeks to advance seamless intra-African travel, cultural exchange, tourism growth, and economic integration. The initiative aligns closely with the African Union’s Agenda 2063 vision for a unified and prosperous continent.

The endorsement was formally announced at a meeting held on September 15, 2025, at the DRC Ministry of Tourism headquarters in Kinshasa. It was led by the country’s Minister of Tourism, H.E. Didier Mazenga Mukanzu, who expressed strong support for the campaign’s mission.

“We believe in the transformative power of tourism to unite our continent and foster economic growth. By removing visa barriers and promoting intra-African travel, we can unlock new opportunities for our people and showcase Africa’s rich cultural heritage to the world,” Minister Mukanzu stated.

The campaign is spearheaded by former Ghanaian legislator Ras Mubarak, who highlighted the DRC’s vast natural wealth and its potential to drive Africa’s development if managed responsibly.

“The DRC is home to some of the world’s most valuable minerals, including cobalt, copper, diamonds, gold, tin, and coltan. If managed well, these resources could comfortably support the rest of Africa for years to come,” Mubarak noted.

He further urged Africans to take control of their collective destiny: “We must resist foreign interference and exploitation, and work together to build a brighter future for our continent. The people of the DRC, and indeed all Africans, deserve dignity, respect, and accountability from leaders and from foreign powers that seek to influence their affairs.”

Campaign Objectives and Progress

The Trans Africa Tourism and Unity Campaign is on a 163-day road trip across 39 African countries, meeting with leaders, civil society, and citizens to promote visa-free travel and stronger continental integration.

The DRC now joins seven other nations that have endorsed the campaign. There are 31 more countries scheduled for engagement as the journey continues.

Next Stops: Southern Africa

Following the endorsement in Kinshasa, the campaign will head to Southern Africa, beginning with Angola and continuing through Namibia, Botswana, South Africa, Lesotho, Eswatini, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Malawi before moving on to East Africa.
