Ahiagbah Mahama

The Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has issued a stern warning to President John Dramani Mahama, urging him to steer clear of any actions that could undermine the independence of the judiciary.

Speaking in an interview on JoyNews‘ The Pulse on Monday, May 5, Mr Ahiagbah criticised what he described as a politically motivated move by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to remove the Chief Justice.

He alleged that the NDC is exploiting weaknesses in the law to carry out a partisan agenda under the guise of legality, noting that “This whole agenda has been cooked. The law is just being used to give effect to their politics,” he claimed.

“It’s not an illegal thing — it’s a political thing, and that for me is a threat to our democracy,” he added.

He insisted that preserving the independence of the judiciary was a key dream of the framers of Ghana’s Constitution and cautioned against politicising the judicial system.

“If President Mahama cannot strengthen the judiciary, then he should leave it untouched,” he declared.

He stressed the equal importance of the judiciary, legislature, and the executive arm in a democratic system, and warned that any attempt to tamper with the judiciary undermines the very foundation of Ghana’s constitutional framework.

According to him, “Nothing will break in this country if the Chief Justice remains in office and the judiciary continues to function independently.”
