Dombo family denies backing Bryan, confirms support for Bawumia

The Dombo family has firmly denied reports suggesting it has endorsed New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer aspirant and Abetifi MP, Dr Bryan Acheampong, describing such claims as misleading and inaccurate.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, and signed by Tracy Rabiatu Dombo and Alexandra Dombo Tenadu, the family rejected a banner headline published by The Chronicle, which read, “DOMBO FAMILY BACKS BRYAN.”

According to the family, the publication does not reflect its position ahead of the NPP’s flagbearership contest scheduled for Saturday, January 31, 2026.

“At no time has the Dombo family endorsed or supported Dr Bryan Acheampong in relation to the party’s flagbearership contest,” the statement said, stressing that the headline created a false and misleading impression.

The family clarified that its support has been openly and consistently declared for Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, whom it considers best suited to lead the party into the future.

“Our support for H.E. Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is based on merit, intellectual depth, resilience, and a demonstrated commitment to the long-term development of Ghana,” the statement noted.

Placing the issue in context, the Dombo family referenced its historical role in Ghana’s political tradition, rooted in the values of integrity, service, and inclusion associated with the Danquah–Busia–Dombo political tradition, which forms the ideological foundation of the NPP.

It cautioned against what it described as attempts to “repurpose” the family name to serve “transient political narratives.”

The statement further highlighted Dr Bawumia’s record in economic management, digitalisation, and public sector reform, arguing that his leadership style and policy depth align with the party’s need for renewal and broader national appeal.

“We believe Dr Bawumia represents the most coherent and credible path forward for the New Patriotic Party,” the family said.

The Dombo family also used the opportunity to call for higher standards in journalism, urging The Chronicle to correct the publication.

“Responsible journalism demands accuracy, context, and verification, particularly when long-standing family names and political legacies are involved,” the statement added.

The clarification comes amid heightened campaigning within the NPP as the party prepares to elect a new flagbearer ahead of the 2028 general elections.
