The Majority Chief Whip in Parliament and MP for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has organised a health screening exercise for his constituents.
Beneficiaries were mostly the aged in the Anum and Kaira Traditional Areas.
This forms part of an agenda to ensure a healthy citizenry to enhance productivity in the South Dayi constituency of the Volta Region.
The agenda is laced with a series of activities designed to enhance and provide health facilities, encourage constituents to adopt healthy lifestyles, inform them of their health status, and support those who may need extra medical care for their conditions.
“As an MP, I decided that on the heels of the festivities, I will organise a health screening so that at the very onset of the year, people will get to know what’s happening in their system. So, if there is a need for medical attention, we take steps to deal with those issues,” he said.
He added that the event also serves as a platform to take stock of activities of 2025 and strategise on areas to focus on in 2026, aiming to harness development and enhance the livelihoods of constituents.
“It is always difficult to get the people, especially those who are not ordinary residents in the community, so when they are around in the festive season, it is easy to get their contributions when the community meets like this,” he added.
The District Chief Executive for South Dayi, Courage Kwame Kokroko, emphasised the need to focus on the health of residents, hence the rollout of the programme.
He explained that this would complement the infrastructural development ongoing in the area by ensuring healthy residents to promote socioeconomic activities.
“As we are working on the road, the infrastructure and all the other things, we need to think about the human beings. So, today, by courtesy of our MP, and the citizens, we have put together this health screening to ensure that our people have a good life and after that, we will be able to support the aged in the community,” he said.
The Chief Executive Officer of Greenfield Scientific Herbal Clinic, Dr Bright Okoe, entreated citizens to take a keen interest in their health and do periodic check-ups to know their status.
He said this would enable them to seek early medical treatment if any condition is identified to prevent the condition from developing to alarming and leading to death, preaching the “MEDS Principle”.
“We needed to be cautious about our health; you need health to make money. Let us all observe the principle of good health; I call it MEDS. One, the M is to meditate on whatever you are doing. Then the E is exercise, the D is diet, so we should watch our diet, and the S is sleep; we must have enough rest to have good health,” he said.
Dr Okoe said that their investigations recorded low Diabetes and hypertension cases but a prevalence of arthritis, attributing it to the farming activities the residents engage in.
The participants were presented with Christmas and New Year hampers sponsored by the office of the MP and the District Assembly.
