The Kintampo South District Assembly in the Bono East Region is finalising processes for work to start on the construction of a new market under the implementation of the government’s flagship 24-hour economy.
According to Kintampo South District Chief Executive, Wilfred Zurri, the Assembly had conducted extensive stakeholder consultations and engagements, explaining that acres of land had been acquired for the development of the market accordingly.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Jema, the district capital, he said the market project would be funded with the District Assembly Common Fund (DACF), adding that the project would be constructed along the Jema-Kintampo highway.
As one of the busiest stretches in the region, Mr Zurri indicated that the assembly together with stakeholders would make arrangements for long and heavy-duty trucks and other buses to park and rest.
He said the market would create and open job and business opportunities for vulcanizers, food vendors, and petty traders, saying “buses and long trucks traveling to Niger and Burkina Faso will have to park and rest.”
Mr Zurri said the market would not only enhance the assembly’s Internally Generated Fund (IGF) but help reduce crashes and fatalities on the highway “because the commercial drivers will have somewhere to park and rest.”
Additionally, he said the market would also create 24-hour job opportunities for the youth in the area and thereby reduce the employment rate in the area.
Mr Zurri urged artisanal workers and women traders to brace themselves for the opportunity, saying that constriction of the market would enhance their jobs, and advised the people to support and cooperate with the Assembly.
