The Constitution Review Committee (CRC) has entered its fourth month of extensive public consultations, gathering input from stakeholders across various sectors as part of efforts to review Ghana’s 1992 Constitution.

In a Facebook update on Thursday, June 6, the Chairman of the Committee, Prof H.Kwasi Prempeh, announced that the committee has held productive meetings with former President H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, former Vice President H.E. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and former Majority Leader and Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu.

He added that the committee will soon announce the new calendar for the rescheduled zonal public engagements across the country.

As of May 16, the 8-member body had conducted 12 thematic stakeholder engagements, 5 identifiable interest group engagements, and 8 eminent person consultations, all aimed at ensuring an inclusive review process.

The committee’s thematic engagements have covered critical areas including Land and Natural Resources, Local Government and Decentralisation, Public Services and State Enterprises, The Judiciary, Executive, and Legislature, Rights, Gender, and Youth, Public Finance and Economic Governance, and Anti-Corruption Measures. Outstanding thematic discussions on Chieftaincy and Citizenship are yet to be held.

Additionally, the CRC has engaged identifiable interest groups such as business and labour organisations, academia, professional bodies, the military, police, other security services, and the media.

The committee has also held high-profile discussions with prominent figures, including former Presidents John Dramani Mahama and J.A. Kufuor, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo, Nana S.K.B. Asante (Chair of the 1992 Constitution Drafting Committee), and governance expert Prof. Kwamena Ahwoi. More engagements with other eminent personalities are expected in the following weeks.

The CRC will also embark on zonal public hearings across the country, with sessions scheduled for Accra, Wa, Bolgatanga, Tamale, Sunyani, Kumasi, Koforidua, Cape Coast, Takoradi, and Ho. An online engagement with the Ghanaian diaspora is also in the works. Exact dates for these hearings will be announced later.

On Monday, May 19, 2025, the committee hosted an X (Twitter) Space discussion moderated by Kaly Jay to further engage the public.

The CRC continues to welcome written memoranda from individuals and organisations. Submissions can be sent to [email protected].

Prof Prempeh has emphasised the committee’s commitment to a transparent and participatory process, urging all Ghanaians to contribute towards shaping the future of the nation’s governance framework.
