The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey says the party has a higher chance of capturing political power in 2024 than the New Patriotic Party.
According to him, the odds appear to be in favour of the NDC because the flagbearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia had a bad track record.
In an exclusive interview with JoyNews on Thursday, Mr Kwetey explained that he had doubts that Dr Bawumia could ever emerge as flagbearer of NPP considering the party’s history. Nevertheless, he said the NDC was prepared for whoever was to emerge flagbearer.
“Congratulations to him [Dr Bawumia] for emerging as a flagbearer of the NPP. We in the NDC welcome it because we are not being complacent but we are totally sure that we are facing a damaged candidate. A candidate that has been exposed for who he is. A candidate who made all kinds of pretences, created the impression that he was some kind of economic messiah, but the reality today as the Bible will call it, he has been found wanting. He has been weighted in the balances and found wanting completely,” he said.
[embedded content]He continued that when Dr Bawumia was introduced in the political scenes, he was very vocal about economic issues yet when he was offered the mantle to lead the country on the path of economic recovery, he failed.
“Not just that, but he was being exposed for being a bla bla mouth. Somebody who basically talks a lot and does very little. He is also been seen to be somebody who cannot be trusted, somebody who has got very low levels of credibility. Meeting him in 2024 is actually really welcomed,” he added.
The NDC General Secretary backed his assertion with the result of the recently held presidential primary of the NPP where Dr Bawumia garnered 61.43% against Assin North MP, Kennedy Agyapong’s 37.41%.
Mr Kwetey stressed that the margin the Vice president polled to emerge as victor was slim thereby proving his point that the NDC has an upper hand come 2024.
