Legal practitioner, Godwin Edudzi Tamakloe, has called for restraint in the ongoing impeachment proceedings against suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo, urging all parties to respect the legal process.
Speaking on Joy News’ Newsfile on Saturday, the Acting CEO of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), stressed the need to maintain procedural integrity in the high-profile case that has captured national attention.
Mr Tamakloe addressed what he described as misconceptions about the impeachment process.
“The Chief Justice had the benefit of responding to a petition. It is also not the law that when evidence is to be taken, the petition ought to be tendered in evidence.”
Drawing from his courtroom experience, Tamakloe explained: “If I had made such proposition before her leadership while she was sitting [as CJ], she would have said, ‘Ah, Edudzi, where did you do your law training?’ You don’t tender the petition or the writ in evidence. That is what invokes the jurisdiction.”
The lawyer’s comments come amid growing public debate about Justice Torkornoo’s recent press conference, where she criticized the process.
He explained that “at this point, all I have to say is that let the sanctity of the process be respected.”
According to him, it is only right that Justice Torkornoo allows the constitutional procedure to run its course without interference, adding that President Mahama is committed to working in line with the constitution.
He further addressed some of the concerns raised by Justice Torkornoo about the fairness of the proceedings, suggesting that certain aspects she questioned were actually standard legal practice.
