A Ghanaian citizen, Alfred Ababio Kumi, has submitted a petition to President John Dramani Mahama, calling for the immediate dissolution of the five-member committee constituted to investigate petitions for the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo.

Mr Kumi argues that the committee’s integrity has been compromised due to alleged breaches of judicial ethics by some of its members.

In his petition, dated May 19th, shortly after the committee’s first sitting on 15 May 2025, Mr Kumi raised concerns about what he described as a compromising meeting involving Justices Gabriel Pwamang and Samuel Adibu-Asiedu—both members of the committee—and Thaddeus Sory, counsel for one of the petitioners.

The meeting is alleged to have taken place that same evening at Santoku Restaurant in Accra’s Airport Residential Area and was reportedly also attended by Supreme Court Justice Yonny Kulendi.

According to Mr Kumi, the judges were overheard discussing issues relating to the petition, which he described as a blatant conflict of interest and a serious violation of judicial conduct.

“The meeting between Justices Pwamang, Kulendi and Asiedu with Thaddeus Sory clearly has destroyed the integrity of the process and reduces public confidence in the process so far,” he stated in the petition.

Mr Kumi also claimed that Justice Pwamang had previously ruled in favour of the same petitioner represented by Mr Sory, while Chief Justice Torkornoo had taken contrary positions in similar matters.

He further alleged that Justices Kulendi, Pwamang and Adibu-Asiedu were all known to have harboured ambitions for the Chief Justice position and were reportedly discontent following the appointment of Justice Torkornoo by President Akufo-Addo.

“Justice Pwamang is known to be interested in becoming the Chief Justice following your election as President… Justice Samuel Kwame Adibu-Asiedu is also on record to have actively lobbied to be the Chief Justice after the exit of Justice Anin Yeboah,” the petition noted.

Describing their actions as “deplorable” and “most unbecoming,” Mr Kumi insisted that the conduct of the implicated judges calls into question their ability to fairly and impartially assess the petitions.

The five-member committee in question, established by the presidency on 22 April 2025, comprises Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang, Justice Samuel Adibu-Asiedu, former Auditor-General Daniel Yao Domelovo, Major Flora Bazwaanura Dalugo of the Ghana Armed Forces, and Professor James Sefah Dzisah of the University of Ghana.
