Christian Council commends government's Sanitation Week initiative ahead of Christmas

The Christian Council of Ghana (CCG) has commended the government for declaring December 13 to 20 as Sanitation Week ahead of the Christmas festivities.

The Council said environmental care was a divine mandate, noting that God appointed humankind as stewards of His creation.

“When we take care of the environment, it will promote the quality of air we breathe, the wholesomeness of the food we eat, and to some extent, prolong our lives on earth,” it added.

A statement signed by Rev. Dr. Cyril G.K. Fayose, the General Secretary of the Council, recalled that on Saturday, September 6, 2025, President John Mahama, under the auspices of the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, relaunched the National Sanitation Day to be observed on the first Saturday of every month.

It said the initiative formed part of the “Clean Up Ghana” agenda aimed at fostering environmental responsibility, improving public health, and enhancing community cleanliness through collective action.

However, in view of the Christmas festivities, the celebration of Farmers’ Day, and the need to ensure cleaner surroundings during the yuletide, the Ministry announced that the December edition had been extended from a single day to a full week.

The Christian Council urged all member churches, Local Councils of Churches (LCCs), and the public to fully participate in the Sanitation Week from December 13 to 20, across the country.

“The environment is our God-given heritage, bequeathed to us by our forebears. It is our duty to keep it clean, safe, and productive for current and future generations,” it said.
