The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has announced a decline in new cholera cases in the Central Region, particularly in the districts of Agona West and Effutu in the Central region, which were initially among the hardest-hit areas.

The Central region, particularly the districts of Agona West and Effutu, experienced a surge in cases in recent weeks.

In the past week alone, these districts reported 133 new cases, with 23 hospital admissions and two fatalities. However, the Minister assured the public “that the number of new cases in these districts is now decreasing, a sign that response efforts are yielding results.”

Since its onset in October 2024 in Ada West, the cholera outbreak spread beyond Greater Accra to four other regions—Central, Western, Ashanti, and Eastern—affecting multiple communities. As of February 13, 2025, Ghana had recorded a total of 6,145 cases, with 719 confirmed and 49 deaths across the five regions.

The situation, however, is showing positive signs of improvement, Mr Mintah Akandoh noted.

To curb the outbreak and prevent further spread, he noted that the Ministry of Health has implemented a multi-sectoral response strategy in collaboration with various stakeholders. The key measures include public awareness campaigns, strategic deployment of oral cholera vaccines, enhanced surveillance, laboratory strengthening, environmental assessments, and improved case management.

The Health Minister emphasised that while the decline in new cases is encouraging, sustained vigilance and adherence to preventive measures remain crucial.
