Deputy Minister for Roads and Highways, Alhassan Suhuyini, says the ministry is committed to ensuring accuracy and transparency in the disbursement of payments to road contractors across the country.
Speaking on JoyFM’s Super Morning Show (SMS), Mr Suhuyini emphasised that the ministry has adopted rigorous verification and evaluation processes to avoid past mistakes in contractor payments.
He noted that before any funds are released, road projects currently under construction are thoroughly assessed, and all reports submitted by contractors are carefully scrutinised for authenticity.
“We are focused on ensuring that we do not make mistakes even in the ways we settled these arrears. So we first of all carried out an audit, using the technical directors at the various agencies and the ministry.”
He said the ministry has identified that some contractors were not paid from the appropriate funding sources.
As a result, the current administration is working closely with the Ministry of Finance to prevent such occurrences under the present government.
“The two ministers (Roads and Finance) are speaking to each other to see how there can be a reconciliation and a way to stop that from happening so that you do not have a situation where people can even have a double claim with the same certificate,” he explained.
Currently, the Road Ministry owes road contractors approximately GH¢21 billion. In a press engagement on Tuesday, the Ministry gave assurance to stakeholders that efforts are ongoing to settle the arrears responsibly and transparently.
