The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has responded to recent remarks made by the Party’s General Secretary, Mr Justin Kodua Frimpong.
He accused him of misrepresentation and called for greater respect and accuracy in intra‑party dialogue.
The National Leadership of the NPP called on the public and stakeholders to disregard recent pronouncements by two of its Regional Chairmen.
In a statement signed by the NPP General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, the party said:
“The National Leadership of the New Patriotic Party urges the public and its stakeholders to disregard recent public pronouncements by the Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, and the Bono Regional Chairman, Mr Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, as their statements do not represent the ideals and practices of the party.”
In response, Mr Antwi Boasiako contends that Mr Frimpong’s statement unfairly portrays him as antagonistic to the party, when in fact his comments were rooted in historical reflection and aimed at contributing ideas to help the NPP recapture power in 2028 under Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s leadership.
Mr Antwi Boasiako revisited key moments in the NPP’s history, notably the internal primaries of 1995‑1998 that paved the way for former President John A. Kufuor’s emergence as flagbearer.
He highlighted how Kufuor, after securing 39% in the 1996 primaries, was again selected by regional delegates in 1998 to lead the party.
He drew parallels between those years of strategic preparation and the current period, arguing that Bawumia requires about 9% (in relative terms) of advantage now to position the NPP for victory in the 2028 election.
“My position as Ashanti regional Chairman … places me closer to the people who tell me about the direction the party should be considering in recapturing power,” Mr Antwi Boasiako said.
He further maintained that his comments have always been truthful, transparent, and not motivated by a personal agenda.
Central to Mr Antwi Boasiako’s rebuttal is the assertion that he “never dragged in the name of our National Council”.
He insists that none of his public engagements involved misusing party institutions and that any suggestion otherwise is misleading.
He criticised Mr Kodua Frimpong for interpreting his words in a manner that misrepresents both his intentions and the facts.
“It is unfortunate Mr Justin Kodua Frimpong has fallen for propaganda seeking to misconstrue my statement,” he stated.
Mr Antwi Boasiako warned about the dangers of misinformation in the age of social media and artificial intelligence, suggesting that statements can be taken out of context or manipulated.
He urged Mr Kodua Frimpong, as General Secretary, to reach out and clarify before issuing public rebukes.
“In this era where saboteurs can easily use tools such as AI to destroy good people, Mr Kodua Frimpong could have simply reached out to me and gotten a full understanding … before issuing a statement that is far from the truth,” the statement concluded.
