The Centre for Social Justice (CSJ) has congratulated its immediate past Chairman, Dr. Sodzi Sodzi-Tettey, on his appointment as Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Ghana’s National Vaccine Institute (NVI) by President John Mahama.

In a press statement issued in Accra on Monday, March 17, 2025, the CSJ described Dr. Sodzi-Tettey’s appointment as a “fitting recognition of his exemplary leadership, strategic vision, and unwavering dedication to public health.”

With a career spanning over two decades in medical practice, health system improvements, and global health leadership, he is expected to play a pivotal role in strengthening Ghana’s vaccine research and manufacturing capacity.

The need for local vaccine production has become increasingly urgent. Ghana currently spends over $11 million annually on vaccine procurement, and experts estimate that for every GHS1 invested in vaccines, the return is GHS54.

As the country moves toward self-reliance in vaccine production, the CSJ stressed that “we cannot afford lacklustre leadership in advancing vaccine development and manufacturing in Ghana.”

Dr. Sodzi-Tettey brings a proven track record in institution-building, having played an instrumental role in national and global health leadership through the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, as well as founding the Ubora Quality Institute and the Centre for Social Justice.

His experience in transforming bold ideas into impactful organizations will be key in establishing institutional frameworks, mobilizing resources, and positioning the NVI as a globally competitive entity.

The CSJ commended President Mahama for what it called a “forward-thinking appointment” and urged government agencies, healthcare professionals, and international partners to support the NVI’s mission.

“We stand firmly behind Dr. Sodzi-Tettey, confident that his integrity, strategic acumen, and results-driven approach will ensure the success of this national endeavor,” the CSJ stated.

The organization also expressed optimism about the role Dr. Sodzi-Tettey will play in advancing Ghana’s health security and vaccine self-sufficiency.
