The Catholic University of Ghana (CUG) has graduated 1,238 students who pursued various undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

They comprised 837 undergraduates and 399 postgraduates.

The university also admitted and matriculated 1,745 fresh students to pursue various degree courses for the 2024/2025 academic year.

Addressing the 23rd congregation and 36th matriculation of the university, held at its main campus at Fiapre in the Sunyani West Municipality, Professor Daniels Obeng-Ofori, the Vice Chancellor of the CUG, disclosed that the university had established a law faculty, to be operational in the 2025/2026 academic year of August and September 2025.

“Our proposal for accreditation has been sent to the Judicial Council for consideration before it is sent to the Ghana Tertiary Education Council (GTEC),” he stated, saying a three-storey building at the Sunyani St Mary’s School was being completed to house the law school.

Prof. Obeng-Ofori said the CUG would continue to aspire to reach its highest potential especially in the areas of knowledge generation through innovative academic programmes and top-notch research and extramural engagements within communities in its catchment areas.

He said new programmes including Bachelor of Physiotherapy, Master of Philosophy (M.phil) English Education, PhD Educational Psychology, PhD Administration and Strategic Leadership Education, PhD Management and Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) had been introduced commencing January 2025.

Prof. Obeng-Ofori said other new programmes including PhD Public Health, PhD Theological Studies, Mphil and MSc. Church Administration and Mphil and MSc. Strategic Communication was also going through accreditation processes.

The Most Reverend Mathew Kwasi Gyamfi, the Catholic Bishop of the Sunyani Diocese and President of the Catholic Bishop Conference commended the management and lecturers for their dedicated services towards the progressive growth and development of the university.

Established on May 3, 2003, and officially inaugurated by former President John Agyekum Kufuor in November, the university started to experience low student enrolment from 2014/2015/2016 academic years due to ferocious academic competition from both public and private universities.

The CUG however came out with a robust strategic plan including a six-year (2019-2024) Corporate Strategic Plan meant to address strategic imperatives that the university needs to focus attention on to ensure not only its survival, but its unique contribution and identity within the institutions of higher education in the country.

The university received a Presidential Charter in March 2022, granting it autonomy as an institution that can award its diplomas and degrees.

This significant achievement allows CUG to operate independently, further solidifying its status as a reputable academic institution

Currently, the CUG has seven faculties and schools, including faculty of economics and business administration, faculty of computing, mathematical and engineering sciences, faculty of education, school of nursing and midwifery, school of public health and allied sciences, faculty of religions and social sciences and school of graduate studies.
