Four non-governmental organisations, Care Net Ghana, AEXCID, SED, DIPUTACION HUELA, and Kikis Court Resort have jointly financed the construction of an 800-capacity girls’ dormitory for the Hohoe E.P Senior High School (HEPSS) in the Hohoe Municipality of the Volta Region.
Sanitary and bathroom facilities have also been handed over to the school to enhance sanitation on campus, by ensuring female students are provided a conducive environment outside the classrooms.
These projects, which cost about 2.8 million Ghana Cedis, would lessen the accommodation challenges of the school and enhance academic performance.
It brings to an end the era of female students sleeping outside on the floor due to inadequate space and beds.
Provision of the dormitory would also free space for academic activities, as students who were previously accommodated in classrooms would move into the new facility.
The Executive Director of Care Net Ghana, Patrick Ahumah said his outfit considered a proposal by the Parent-Teachers Association of HEPSS over the urgent need for a girls’ dormitory, hereby pooling resources from 4 other organisations to undertake the project.
He indicated that about 2.8 million Ghana Cedis raised was channeled into the construction of the 800-bed dormitory, 20 capacity bathroom, and an 18-seater sanitary facility for the females.
“As the Director of Care Net, I am filled with profound gratitude for the unwavering support and trust bestowed upon us by our generous donors -AEXCID, SED, DIPUTACION HUELA all of which are based in Espana, and of course our own Kikis Court Resort. Their selfless contributions, driven by a shared vision, have transformed the dream of a safe and nurturing living space for our girls into a tangible reality as we can see today”, he said.
He further indicated that “education has always been the cornerstone of Care Net’s mission, and
this new dormitory block stands as a testament to our unwavering commitment to providing quality education and a conducive living environment for our girls. We firmly believe that by investing in their
education, we are investing in the transformation of their lives, their families, and our entire community”.
He is optimistic the provision of the facility would complement efforts in promoting women’s empowerment, and entreated the female students to take charge of their lives and focus on becoming people of substance in the future.
“Let us remain steadfast in our commitment to gender equality, education, and the empowerment of young women, for their success is a testament to the strength and resilience of our community”, he added.
The Headmaster of HEPSS, Franklin Amesimeku appreciated the gesture by the donors, detailing how the school had struggled to provide residential facilities for the students.
He, however, appealed to all and sundry to support the school in furnishing the newly constructed dormitory with metal beds to complement the efforts of Care Net Ghana and its allies.
Mr. Amesimeku lamented the vulnerability of the female students and called for the urgent construction of a fence around the girls’ dormitory, and the provision of streetlights to light up the campus community to prevent outsiders from intruding and “engaging in immoral acts with the students.”
The Municipal Chief Executive for Hohoe, Noble Awume lauded the organizations for the yeoman’s job, “as it complements the government’s free SHS policy.”
The Gbi Traditional Authority urged the school’s management to maintain the facility to ensure it serves its purpose.
