Cardinal’s visit marks 75th anniversary of Ghana’s Archdiocese of Cape Coast

The Catholic Church in Ghana has marked the 75th anniversary of the Archdiocese of Cape Coast with a renewed call to faith, unity, and service.

The celebration, held at the Apostolic Nunciature in Accra, brought together clergy, religious leaders, and the faithful from across the country. The event was graced by Pope Leo XIV’s Special Envoy, His Eminence Cardinal Wilfrid Fox Napier, who joined the congregation in reflecting on the Church’s journey and mission in modern Ghana.

Held under the theme “Remember the past with gratitude, live the present with enthusiasm, and face the future with confidence,” the anniversary highlighted the Church’s transformation from its missionary roots in the Gold Coast to a vibrant Catholic community across the nation.

Representing the Holy Father, Apostolic Nuncio to Ghana, Julien Kabore, commended the media for promoting truth and peace, urging journalists to uphold ethical standards and practice responsible communication in the digital era.

“It is the media that helps shape the moral fabric of society,” he said. “When journalists tell the truth and act responsibly, they help build peace and strengthen unity.”

Cardinal Napier praised the Ghanaian Catholic community for its resilience and commitment to evangelization, describing the milestone as “a testament of faith, resilience, and renewal.”

He encouraged the faithful to remain steadfast in their Christian values amid modern social and moral challenges.

“The Church’s mission is not only to preach but also to serve,” he said. “In every parish, every community, and every act of charity, we must bring the presence of Christ to others.”

The Catholic Church in Ghana has long been recognized for its leadership in education and healthcare. From the establishment of mission schools to the construction of hospitals and social centres, the Church continues to shape national development and moral consciousness.

As part of the commemoration, prayers were offered for peace, national unity, and the well-being of Ghana’s youth. The congregation was reminded that the future of the Church depends on young people who embrace faith, integrity, and service.

The celebration also reaffirmed the Catholic Church’s social mission and its commitment to education, health, peacebuilding, and responsible media engagement.

As the Church embarks on a new chapter, the message from the Holy See remains clear: to keep truth, peace, and service at the heart of its mission to Ghana and beyond.
