Members of the Minority in Parliament have strongly criticized the decision by President Akufo-Addo’s government to cancel the Convention 2024.
According to the NDC MPs, the cancellation of the event was a source of disgrace for Ghana and demanded an apology from the government.
Deputy Minority Chief Whip, Ahmed Ibrahim, speaking to the media in Parliament on Tuesday, January 9, expressed his view that the move indicates a lack of confidence in the Akufo-Addo government.
The lawmaker from Banda asserted that if the government was performing well, it would have allowed the convention to proceed, enabling the group to praise its achievements.
However, due to the perceived fear of the group highlighting the government’s disappointing performance, the event was swiftly canceled.
“If Pan Africanism which started in Ghana cannot be reignited in Ghana again, then there is no hope for the black man, and I am surprised that the president will sit down for such a thing to happen.
“The cancellation is a clear vote of no confidence by the president’s government. When you know you are governing well, allow them to come and praise you. Are you preempting what you know they were going to say, or do you think they were just going to declare your failures, and that is why you did not want them to declare them? If the government was ruling very well, he would have waited for them to come and rain praise on him.”
“Akufo-Addo knows that he failed and therefore doesn’t want foreigners to come and be saying it but the world is a global village and so everybody knows that he has failed,” Ahmed Ibrahim said.
Meanwhile, the Diaspora Affairs Directorate at the Office of the President has provided clarification on the abrupt cancellation of The Convention 2024, organized by the New Africa Foundation.
Despite receiving approval in November 2023, the organizers were instructed to call off the event, causing confusion and disappointment among participants.
Dr. Nadia Adongo Fynn, Deputy Director of the Diaspora Affairs Directorate, explained that the decision to revoke the permission was prompted by the emergence of an “unforeseen” state event scheduled to take place at the Black Star Square venue.
