Businesswoman charged after CID raid uncovers cannabis-laced drinks and toffees

An extensive, intelligence-led operation by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has led to the arraignment of a 45-year-old businesswoman, Millicent Asamoah Ampofo, before an Accra Circuit Court.

She faces a serious provisional charge of unlawful control of a narcotic drug following the discovery of numerous drinks and confectionery items suspected to be mixed with cannabis at her drinking spot in Taifa, Accra.

The accused appeared before the court, presided over by Mr. Kwabena Kodua Obiri-Yeboah, last Tuesday.

Due to the need for scientific confirmation of the contents, her plea was not taken, and the items have been submitted to the Police Forensic Science Laboratory for detailed analysis.

The police operation and subsequent search of Millicent’s premises on November 5, 2025, revealed a sophisticated, small-scale production and distribution operation. The items seized underscore the variety of products allegedly being infused with narcotics and sold to the public.

Key Figures and Seized Items:

Category Quantity Suspected Substance Price Point (Alleged)
Sobolo Drink 47 plastic bottles Cannabis GH₵5.00 per bottle
Mango Drink 20 bottles Cannabis GH₵20.00 per bottle
Unidentified Liquids 23 bottles Unknown/Cannabis N/A
Toffees (Hard Brown) 180 pieces Cannabis GH₵5.00 per toffee
Raw Materials 2 plastic containers Dried plant material (suspected cannabis) N/A
Powders 2 rubber bags Powdery substances N/A

The brief facts presented by the prosecution detailed the accused’s alleged confession during interrogation. Millicent Asamoah Ampofo reportedly admitted that all the seized items belonged to her and that she was responsible for producing and selling the narcotics-infused goods herself.

She further disclosed that her supply chain originated with a single individual, known only as “Richard,” who is said to be based in Accra.

The Police have confirmed that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the said Richard and dismantle the larger network responsible for supplying the raw narcotics.

While the prosecution did not object to bail, the court opted for strict conditions given the gravity of the potential charges, which could shift from provisional to substantive upon receipt of the forensic report.

The presiding judge granted her bail in the sum of GH¢50,000 with one surety.

The court also directed the prosecution to file all relevant disclosures to the defense team before the next adjourned date.

This move ensures procedural fairness and allows the defense to prepare based on the official laboratory findings.

The strict bail condition is intended to ensure Millicent’s presence in court as the investigation continues into the alleged contamination of consumer goods with controlled substances.
