Breaking up before the holidays: Is it better to let go before or after the festive season?

This week’s The Brotherhood discussion tackled a bold and timely question: ‘Is it wise to spend the holidays with someone you plan to break up with?’

Host Kofi Hayford kicked things off with an intriguing introduction, drawing a connection between the emotional complexities of relationships and the festive season. With drinks in hand, he introduced his guests, MC Wayne, Zeal, and Alvin, all ready for a lively conversation.

Kofi initiated the conversation by asking MC Wayne whether he would choose to break up with a partner during the festive season or after the holidays.

Wayne quickly responded, “The earlier, the better.” He explained that it is better to be upfront and honest rather than carry the burden of a breakup while pretending everything is fine.

He argued that breaking up during the holidays would only spoil her mood, and it is unfair to keep someone in the dark. He added that faking love would leave “footprints,” something he did not want to do.

Zeal, on the other hand, had a more dramatic approach. “If I have a backup, I would break up at 11:59 PM on New Year’s Eve,” he said, joking that he would party with his partner only to break up with her right before midnight—a humorous yet cold approach. For Zeal, timing did not matter once the interest was gone.

Alvin took a more straightforward stance, saying that regardless of the season, he would not hide his disinterest in a relationship, though he admitted that breaking up during the holidays would be tough. “It’s difficult, but I wouldn’t hide it,” he stated.

Kofi wrapped up the segment by noting that while the guys made valid points, he personally could not bring himself to break up with someone during the festive season. He said he would rather let things be than disrupt the holiday spirit.

The conversation then shifted to another controversial question: “Is it okay to gift an ex during the festive season?”

Alvin was firm in his stance: “You can only gift your ex if you have a child together.” MC Wayne agreed, stressing that gifts should be reserved for those who truly matter. Zeal, however, disagreed, arguing that there is no harm in gifting an ex, especially if there are still feelings involved.

In the end, the panel agreed that breakups are never easy—especially during the holidays. Whether one chooses to end things before or after the season, the underlying truth remains that honesty, even when painful, is better than pretending. As for gifting an ex, that debate remains open, with opinions ranging from cold indifference to open generosity.
