Breaking Barriers in Geomatics: Dr Naa Dedei Tagoe becomes 1st female professor specialising in photogrammetry and UAV applications

The University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) proudly announces the promotion of Dr Naa Dedei Tagoe to Associate Professor of Geomatics, marking a historic milestone as the first female professor in Geomatics specialising in Photogrammetry and UAV applications in Ghana.

Prof. Tagoe’s expertise spans land surveying, photogrammetry, UAV/drone mapping, GIS, and remote sensing. She is also a Licensed Land Surveyor. She blends rigorous academic scholarship with hands-on professional practice, applying geospatial science to address pressing challenges such as food security, sustainable mining, climate resilience, and community empowerment.

Her commitment to developing the next generation of geospatial leaders is evident in her role with YouthMappers, where she mentors young people in harnessing geospatial technology for sustainable development. As a Mandela Washington Fellow, she champions leadership, innovation, and women’s empowerment across Africa, demonstrating the power of knowledge, mentorship, and service beyond borders.

On the global stage, Prof. Tagoe serves as Chair-elect of FIG Commission 8 (Spatial Planning and Development), contributing to shaping international policy and practice in land governance, spatial planning, and sustainable urban growth. Her work amplifies Ghana’s voice in the global geospatial community and underscores the vital role of African expertise in tackling development challenges.

Her promotion is not only a personal achievement but also a landmark for women in STEM, breaking gender barriers in a traditionally male-dominated field. Assoc Prof. Tagoe’s journey stands as a beacon of inspiration to students, young professionals, and women across Africa, proving that determination, excellence, and vision can redefine possibilities in science, technology, and leadership.
