A pull-out ceremony was held for the Bono Regional Prison Commander and Deputy Director of Prisons (DDP), Williams Kulah, at the Sunyani Central Prison.

The event brought together Regional Commanders from various security services, clergy members, departmental heads, members of the Regional Security Council (RESEC), residents, stakeholders, and the Bono Regional Minister.

DDP Williams Kulah served in the Ghana Prison Service in various capacities for 32 years, 9 months, and 28 days.

The ceremony, which took place at the Sunyani Central Prison football field, saw the Bono Regional Minister, Joseph Addae Akwaboah, commend DDP Williams Kulah for his contributions to the command.

Under DDP Kulah’s leadership, he facilitated the construction of an astro-turf football field which is near completion at the Sunyani Central Prison through the Middle Belt Development Authority, renovation of the administration block, tiling of all offices, giving a facelift to the administration block and all blocks at the barracks of the Central Pnson.

He also constructed a church for the Kete-Krachi local prison, drilled two mechanised boreholes to solve perennial water problem at the Kete-Krachi local prison, secured university admission for four inmates and full scholarship for one of the four inmates to further education at the Catholic University and re-roofed the inmates’ kitchen at the Sunyani Central Prison.

DDP Williams Kulah joined the Ghana Prison Service in 1992. Before that, he earned a Diploma in Journalism from the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ) in 1991 and worked as a reporter for the Ghana News Agency in Cape Coast.

He served two and a half years as a recruit officer before being promoted to the rank of Chief Officer in July 1995. Due to his hard work and dedication, he was appointed as head of the Rapid Response Team, where he served for 10 years before being transferred to Ankaful Main Camp Prison in 2008.

While at Ankaful, he was seconded to the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in South Sudan from June 2009 to May 2011, where he served as a correctional advisor and mentor in Rumbek (Lakes State) and Bentiu (Unity State). His role involved training local staff on best prison practices and leading train-the-trainer programs.

Upon his return, DDP Kulah was posted to Kete-Krachi Local Prison as the second-in-command. In June 2013, he was appointed Officer-in-Charge of Kete-Krachi Local Prison, a position he held until October 2022, when he was named Officer-in-Charge of Sunyani Central Prison and Regional Commander for Bono, Bono East, and Ahafo Regions.

The Bono Regional Minister, in his farewell speech, commended DDP Kulah for his service and assured him that the region would seek his assistance when needed.

The outgoing Bono Regional Prison Commander expressed his gratitude to the people of Bono, Bono East, and Ahafo Regions, as well as officers and stakeholders, for their support throughout his tenure.

He urged officers to remain diligent in their duties to uphold the mandate of the Ghana Prison Service.
