The Bono Regional Minister, Joseph Addae Akwaboa, has disclosed that several key roads in the region have been earmarked for construction and rehabilitation under the government’s “Big Push” infrastructure initiative aimed at promoting socio-economic development.
He was speaking at the first meeting of the Bono Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) and the inauguration of new members in Sunyani.
The minister listed some of the roads set for development, including the Alaska–Catholic University (Ring Road), Berekum–Sampa road, Sunyani–Techiman road, Berekum–Seikwa–Nsawkaw road, and the Sunyani–Atronie–Hwidiem road, the latter being executed in collaboration with Newmont Ghana.
Other major roads to receive attention include the Techiman–Wenchi–Wa and Kyeremasu–Gambia roads.
Mr. Akwaboa added that routine maintenance works are also ongoing on several feeder and urban roads, with new contracts being awarded to improve accessibility and support local economic activity.
He further noted that the security situation in the region remains largely stable and peaceful, despite occasional incidents such as chieftaincy disputes and criminal activities. The minister commended the security agencies, as well as Municipal and District Security Councils, for their commitment to maintaining peace and order.
The meeting brought together Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), members of the Regional House of Chiefs, representatives from the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC), and heads of departments and agencies.
Meanwhile, Mr. Akwaboa announced that the Sunyani Teaching Hospital has now obtained full legal recognition following the approval of the relevant Legislative Instrument (L.I.). He said this development clears the way for the establishment of a Medical School at the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), a move he believes will greatly enhance healthcare delivery and human resource development in the Bono Region.
The minister urged stakeholders to support the initiative to ensure its successful implementation.
