Following their gold medal triumph at the 13th African Games, the Black Princesses of Ghana are now focusing on the upcoming U-20 Women’s World Cup.
The team, led by head coach Yusif Basigi, has been preparing for the 11th edition of the tournament by participating in a friendly match, where they secured a goalless draw against Mexico.
The World Cup will be held in Colombia from August 31 to September 22, 2024.
Ghana has been placed in Group E, where they will face Austria, New Zealand, and former champions Japan.
The Princesses will open their campaign against Austria before playing New Zealand and Japan in the group stage.
Several rising stars are expected to play critical roles in Ghana. A former Black Maidens captain, Stella Nyamekye of Dreamz Ladies, is anticipated to strengthen the midfield.
Nyamekye’s impressive performances, including a hat-trick in a pre-tournament friendly and a pivotal role in Ghana’s WAFU Zone B victory, mark her as a key player. Despite a recent injury, she has returned to another player to watch the squad.
Mafia Nyame of AS FAR was instrumental in the African Games and had previous World Cup experience.
Nyame expressed her enthusiasm for the tournament and her determination to make a significant impact this year.
Defender Alexandra Emefa Tay from Seattle United ECNL will bolster Ghana’s defence.
Tay, known for her solid defensive performances in the U.S., will partner with Comfort Yeboah to form a strong defensive unit.
The Black Princesses aim to advance beyond the group stage for the first time.
Although they have previously been eliminated in the group stages in their six consecutive World Cup appearances from 2010 to 2022, the team remains optimistic about altering their historical performance this year.
