Biyalsis Guritaaba Social Club takes medical outreach to Wiaga

A group of professionals known as the Biyalsis Guritaaba Social Club has organised a medical outreach in the Chiok community of Wiaga in the Builsa North District of the Upper East Region.

The initiative, which targeted residents who often could not afford medical care, saw 441 patients receive critical care and 71 individuals with surgical conditions booked for crucial operations.

The Biyalsis Guritaaba Social Club began as a circle of friends who often met for socialisation.

The group’s name, Biyalsis, is a humorous reference to a public perception at the time that its members were “bad boys” with little future. Biyalsis Guritaaba translates, “bad boys” who are there for each other.

More than twenty years on, the club has grown to more than 50 professionals working in medicine, information technology, business, politics, and other fields both within and outside of Ghana.

Its mission has also expanded from social engagement to community development, leveraging members’ diverse expertise to support underserved communities.

The medical outreach was conducted in Chiok, a community in the Upper East region, where two club members hail from.

The President of the Biyalsis Guritaaba Social Club, John Asaana, explained the approach, saying, “We often select a deprived area where members come from.

Today, we are here because two of our members come from this community, so we have come to serve them through this medical outreach.”

Medical staff conducted assessments and provided essential care.

Dr Lawrence Kankpeyeng, a club member and physician who attended to patients, revealed that the event addressed a range of medical conditions, including several surgical cases.

“There are several medical conditions that we encountered, including some surgical conditions such as hernias, lumps and bumps, and some swellings along the spine. Some of the cases will be operated on today, and the rest will be operated on later in January 2026”, he said.

The Chiok Assemblyman, Emmanuel Atembisa, described the medical outreach as a lifeline for many residents who previously could not access routine check-ups or affordable care.

He thanked the Biyalsis Guritaaba Social Club for bringing the outreach to Chiok and GOIL PLC for its partnership and called for additional health interventions in the future.
