Bekwai roundabout to Santasi road to be completed by July - Contractor

Contractors have resumed full-scale works on the Bekwai roundabout to Santasi road project after stalling for over 6 months now.

The road is a crucial network leading to the Central business district and the main referral hospital in the region, the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

But the contractors abandoned the road in 2025 citing non-payment of certificates for the road’s continuation.

The Bekwai roundabout to Santasi roundabout is one of the critical road infrastructure in the Greater Kumasi metropolis.

The road connects at least three of Ghana’s southern regions to the main referral hospital in the Ashanti region, the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

The road also leads to the Central business district of Kumasi.

In 2024, the government initiated a dualisation of the road for improved vehicular movement.

But the road project stalled only after the contractor laid works for bridge construction, grading, and expansion of the road.

Contractors on the road had cited concerns over non-payments of certificates.

For over 6 months, motorists had to endure dust, regular vehicle maintenance, and hefty vehicular traffic on alternate routes.

After months of discomfort endured by the motorists, government has made significant a payment to contractors to resume works.

“We intervened to have the ministry of roads to have some funds released to finish up this stretch. If an ambulance want to use this stretch they have to pass through Danyame which presents discomforts to accessing KATH. This is an important road for health care,” Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, Kumasi mayor, noted.

The first phase of asphalting a single lane of the project is expected to be completed by the first quarter of the year with the full road completion scheduled for July this year.

Francis Kofi Yankey is the acting resident engineer for ABO Consult Limited constructions.

“Last week Friday we officially resumed work. We are prioritizing the right lane of the road. The plan is to asphalt this side from Santasi toward Bekwai. By three months time, this place will be asphalted. Hopefully, by the end of July we will see both sides of the dual carriageway asphalted,” he noted.
