Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has criticised the Electoral Commission (EC) for what he calls an “indecent haste” in scheduling a rerun of the Kpandai parliamentary election.
He argued that the decision disregards ongoing judicial processes currently before the High Court and the Supreme Court, involving New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate Matthew Nyindam. According to him, it is wrong for the EC to proceed as though the legal issues have been resolved when none of the appeals filed by Nyindam have been determined.
Dr Bawumia referenced past cases, including those of Dan Kwasi Abodakpi and James Gyakye Quayson, where Parliament and state institutions waited for all court processes to conclude before taking action. He suggested that the current approach by the NDC government and its allied institutions departs from these long-standing democratic practices.
He warned that bypassing established safeguards threatens the integrity of Ghana’s governance structures and sets a dangerous precedent where political expediency overrides respect for the rule of law.
Dr Bawumia insisted that Nyindam must be allowed to fully exhaust his legal rights before any electoral decisions are made.
