Bawumia leads NPP delegation to Rawlings' home; signs Konadu’s book of condolence

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, accompanied by a delegation of high-ranking New Patriotic Party (NPP) officials, paid a solemn visit to the family of the late former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, on Monday, October 27, 2025.

Dr. Bawumia offered his condolences and signed the book of condolence for the longest-serving First Lady, who passed away on Thursday, October 23, at the Ridge Hospital in Accra.

The visit underscores the national significance of Nana Konadu’s legacy, drawing respect from Ghana’s highest political echelon, even across party lines.

Dr. Bawumia was accompanied by his wife, Samira Bawumia, marking a joint expression of sympathy to the Rawlings family.

The delegation included several prominent figures who served in the immediate past administration, demonstrating the NPP’s recognition of the former First Lady’s impact.

Key figures accompanying the former Vice President included:

  • Former Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensa-Bonsu
  • Former Education and Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh
  • Former Works and Housing Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah

During his visit, Dr. Bawumia expressed deep sympathy to the bereaved Rawlings family and officially acknowledged the late former First Lady’s immense contributions to Ghanaian society—particularly her tireless work in women’s empowerment, child welfare, and social development.

Amidst the outpouring of tributes, a critical lament was raised by Elikem Kotoko, Deputy CEO of the Forestry Commission, concerning the Ghanaian cultural tendency to celebrate public figures only after they have passed.

Kotoko described Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings as a trailblazer whose significant achievements and dedication to national life should have been more widely and robustly honoured during her lifetime.

The former First Lady’s passing has spurred numerous reactions from across the country, uniformly highlighting her strong convictions and contributions to social advocacy and gender equality, cementing her reputation as one of Ghana’s most formidable female leaders.
