Bawumia is currently the most marketed candidate in NPP race - Prof Nortey

Associate Professor at the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science at the University of Ghana, has said that former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia currently enjoys the strongest visibility and recognition among aspirants in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) upcoming internal race.

Contributing to discussions on the latest Global Info Analytics poll, which suggests that Dr. Bawumia is leading in the upcoming election, Prof Ezekiel Nortey, explained that Dr Bawumia’s experience has given him a natural advantage in terms of public awareness and political marketing.

“He is the most marketed person currently in the NPP. None of them except has been on the ballot paper as someone vying for the presidency of Ghana, so he is the most marketed person if you ask me. So that in itself is giving him some leverage,” he said on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Friday.

He, however, cautioned that popularity does not automatically translate into electoral victory.

“What we are doing now is like we are influencing an outcome that is yet to come.”

“So people will hear ‘oh Bawumia is leading, so let us vote for him’, or the discussion currently is that Bawumia is on top, so we should give him the nod. So we must be mindful that that could also lead to some bid of people moving to that,” he cautioned.

The remarks come as debate intensifies over the credibility and implications of the Global Info Analytics survey, which suggested Dr Bawumia is leading ahead of the party’s internal contest.

According to the polls, Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has emerged as the clear frontrunner in the race to lead the opposition NPP into the 2028 general elections, according to a new poll by Global Info Analytics released on August 21, 2025.

The survey shows Dr. Bawumia commanding 52% support among NPP delegates ahead of the party’s presidential primaries, giving him a decisive edge over his rivals.

His closest challenger, former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, trails far behind with 17%. Other aspirants fared poorly, with Dr. Bryan Acheampong polling 3%, former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum 1%, and former General Secretary Kwabena Agyapong, Boakye Agyarko, and Addai Nimo each recording less than 1%.
