Political analyst and Senior Lecturer at the University of Education, Winneba, Dr. Tutu Boahene, has called on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to offer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia a second opportunity to lead the party into the 2028 general elections.

Speaking on Adom TV’s Big Agenda, Dr. Boahene argued that historical trends favour second-time presidential contenders in Ghana.

“Ghana’s political history shows that many candidates win the presidency on their second attempt. The late President John Evans Atta Mills contested more than once before succeeding. The same applies to President John Mahama and former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo,” he noted.

His comments follow a recent endorsement of Dr. Bawumia by over 60 NPP MPs and 220 former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), who pledged their support for his potential 2028 bid.

The former MMDCEs, who served under the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration between 2017 and 2024, promised to rally behind Dr. Bawumia with their votes, resources, and influence to help him secure the party’s leadership.

Dr. Boahene described the endorsement as significant, saying, “The support from the former MMDCEs clearly shows their confidence in Dr. Bawumia’s leadership. He has already contested for the flagbearer position, and giving him a second chance could yield results, just as it did for his predecessors.”

While acknowledging the credentials of other NPP aspirants, he stressed that Dr. Bawumia’s consistency and experience make him a compelling candidate for the party’s future.

“All the aspirants have potential, but giving Dr. Bawumia another chance could be what propels him to the presidency,” he added.

So far, three prominent figures have declared their intention to contest the NPP presidential primaries scheduled for January 31, 2026 — Abetifi MP and former Food and Agriculture Minister Dr. Bryan Acheampong, former Education Minister and Bosomtwe MP Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong.

Although Dr. Bawumia is yet to formally announce his candidacy, the growing support from party stakeholders signals increasing momentum behind his potential bid.
