Former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia has called for the eradication of tribal and religious divisions within the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Addressing the party’s National Delegates Conference, the 2024 presidential candidate described such biases as an “existential threat” to the party’s foundational values. His remarks came during the NPP’s post-election restructuring following its 2024 defeat.
Bawumia emphasized the NPP’s historical commitment to inclusivity, urging members to actively preserve this legacy. “The bonds of unity in diversity have been our lifeblood,” he stated, demanding an immediate end to divisive language and actions. He directly linked internal cohesion to regaining public trust, warning that fractures would prevent the party from fulfilling its purpose.
The former vice president positioned unity as non-negotiable for the NPP’s political recovery ahead of the 2028 elections. “With unity and consistency we can regain the trust of Ghanaians,” Bawumia asserted, contrasting this with scenarios of internal conflict hindering the party’s revival. His intervention highlights ongoing challenges within the opposition as it reevaluates its strategy under the current NDC administration.
