Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has applauded Star Oil Ghana Limited for adopting Ghana’s new individualised credit scoring system to allow drivers to buy fuel on credit using their Ghanacard.

The initiative, he said, demonstrates the practical value of the digital reforms he championed while in office.

Star Oil on Monday, December 8, announced its “Fuel Now, Pay Later” scheme, which enables customers to register on the My Credit Score app with their Ghanacard and purchase fuel on credit, to be repaid later through mobile money.

The scheme combines three key digital systems—credit scoring, Ghanacard identification and mobile money interoperability.

In a statement, Dr Bawumia praised the move, describing it as innovative and beneficial to everyday Ghanaians, especially commercial drivers.

“It makes it possible for Ghanaians, especially drivers, to buy fuel on credit using their Ghanacard through the individualised credit scoring system.”

He recalled launching the credit scoring initiative last year, noting that some doubted its feasibility. The new fuel-credit programme, he said, shows that Ghana’s digital infrastructure is creating new opportunities for businesses and consumers.

Dr Bawumia also highlighted the broader goal of building a credit-based economy to ease financial pressure on households. He explained that countries with strong credit systems often enjoy more flexible payment options, and Ghana is now laying the groundwork for the same.

“A credit economy is vital in making life a lot less stressful for many people in advanced economies,” he said.

“Thankfully, we have put in place the foundational pillars—Ghanacard, digital addressing, mobile money interoperability and the individualised credit scoring system.”

He encouraged other oil marketing companies and businesses to follow Star Oil’s example by integrating the credit scoring system into their services to give Ghanaian workers more purchasing options.

The scheme is expected to benefit thousands of drivers nationwide, marking a significant step in Ghana’s shift toward digital financial inclusion.
