The Awisa Municipal Assembly (MA) Basic School in the Wenchi Municipality of the Bono has received a donation of furniture.

Hitherto, the pupils of the school complained of how the lack of furniture negatively affects academic work. Pupils who do not have access to the limited dual desks available sit and write on the floor.

They have therefore, called on well-meaning Ghanaians to further assist the school and others in the area with furniture to aid effective teaching and learning.

According to the headteacher of the school, Benjamin Nketia, only 70 dual desks have been available for the population of over 500 pupils to use.

Due to the inadequacy of furniture in the school, most of the pupils sometimes sit on mats during lessons.

“The situation has made teaching and learning less attractive to the pupils, whilst those who are burnt on learning, lie down on mats to write,” Mr Nketia stressed.

The Project Director of Christ Apostolic Child Development Centre, Collins Agyempong, said they are committed to enhancing quality education in the Wenchi municipality.

‘‘We provided the furniture, including kindergarten tables and chairs, table and chairs for teachers, dual and mono desks for the basic school pupils at the cost of 48,800 Ghana cedis,’’ he stated.

He said, “We have seen the lack of furniture at the Awisa M/A Basic School as a horrible situation that is not encouraging pupils to stay in school.

“That is why we sought assistance from Compassion International to provide furniture for the school to make academic work effective,” Mr Agyempong added.

He urged the school to take good care of the furniture to justify the investment that has been made to provide the furniture.

Receiving the furniture, the Wenchi Municipal Public Relations Officer for the Ghana Education Service, David Baffoe, acknowledged that inadequate furniture is one of the challenges affecting the directorate.

He said the 200 pieces of school furniture donated by Compassion International through Christ Apostolic Child Development Centre will lessen their plight.

Mr Baffoe appealed to other benevolent organisations to help augment the furniture deficit in the municipality.
