Ministry of Transport has revealed that the legislative instrument to operationalise the automated road traffic enforcement services is expected to be passed by Parliament by the end of March, 2026.

The legislation will provide the legal framework for the deployment of an automated system (Traffitech-GH) designed to detect and sanction road traffic offenders in real time.

The Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, disclosed this while inspecting facilities deployed to enable the seamless rollout of the system.

The visit formed part of efforts by the ministry to assess the operational readiness of the system ahead of the anticipated passage of the law.

According to the minister, the legislative instrument that will support the rollout of the technology is already progressing through the parliamentary process and should mature before the end of the month.

“The L.I. has made about nine sitting days and I think we are left with 11 sitting days and by next two weeks, that is by end of March, we should see the law being passed by Parliament,” Mr. Nikpe revealed.

Mr. Nikpe further stressed that the technology will significantly strengthen enforcement and reduce human interference in road traffic policing.

Once operational, the system will enable the Ghana Police Service, particularly the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), to monitor traffic offences through a network of surveillance technologies.

Meanwhile, Chief Supt. Alexander Obeng, Project Lead at Traffitech-GH, outlined punishments for offenders. He disclosed that offenders will be charged a minimum of GH₵ 240 for overspeeding and at least GH₵ 120 for any other road traffic offense.

“When the offense is captured, you will be given a 14-day period to respond or seek redress; after that, any additional day will attract a 1% surcharge,” he cautioned.

“This system is aimed at deterring road users, including motorbikes, from overspeeding and instilling discipline on the roads,” he added.
