A Circuit Court in Accra has fixed February 18, 2026, to begin the trial of Theophilus Thompson, a sympathiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), accused of assaulting Multimedia journalist Latif Iddrisu.
The accused is alleged to have acted together with other supporters to attack the journalist in May 2025 at the premises of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in Accra.
Latif Iddrisu was assaulted in the line of duty while on a live broadcast, reporting on the arrest and interrogation of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, by EOCO.
According to the prosecution, the accused person and others, who are still on the run, charged at the journalist and assaulted him live on prime-time television. The incident occurred as the journalist was reporting on an attack on a police pick-up truck by some NPP supporters who had massed up at the entrance of the EOCO office.
Following the incident, police declared the suspects wanted and launched an immediate manhunt, which led to the arrest of Theophilus Thompson at his hideout in Jamestown, a suburb of Accra. The other suspects remain at large.
Mr Thompson pleaded not guilty when he was arraigned before the court on Monday, June 9, 2025, and was subsequently remanded into police custody. He is currently on bail in the sum of GH¢50,000.
Parties to the case concluded the Case Management Conference on Monday, January 19, 2026, after which the presiding judge, His Honour Kwabena Kodua Obiri-Yeboah, set February 18, 19, 25 and 26, 2026, for the commencement of the trial.
