The National Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has called for what he terms a complete reset of Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC).

General Mosquito, as he is normally called, insists that the current leadership has failed the nation and must be replaced.

Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express on Monday, June 23, Asiedu Nketia described the EC as “not fit for purpose,” citing what he sees as repeated failures in conducting credible elections.

“We are having the wrong election management body in place, and so that is a subject of reset in the future,” he said.

Pressed by host Evans Mensah to explain what “resetting the EC” means, the NDC Chairman didn’t mince words.

“It means bringing it back to an institution that is fit for purpose,” he stressed.

“Because the way it is existing now, it is not fit for purpose. With all the laws we have, you still cannot have an election that will go into a stalemate.”

He pointed to the unresolved case of the Ablekuma North parliamentary seat, which has remained vacant for six months after the 2024 elections, as a symbol of systemic failure.

“There is no anticipation of any stalemate in an election in any of our laws — unless people don’t want to do their work well. So it’s a clear case of negligence or inability to perform its functions,” he said.

Mr Asiedu Nketia argued that the current Electoral Commission, under Jean Mensa’s leadership, has never delivered a credible election since taking office.

“When this Commission, as presently constituted, took over the reins… they have never done an election that is satisfactory,” he said.

“The first one, a whole constituency — SALL — went unrepresented for four years. Their second election is this one. And with the by-elections — Ayawaso West — everything has been a mess.”

He described the EC’s record as “overwhelming evidence” of institutional breakdown.

“If any serious country wants to maintain this type of Electoral Commission, then I don’t know what the country is about,” he warned.

When asked directly if there would be changes at the EC, Asiedu Nketia was emphatic.

“There has to be a change,” he said. Pressed further on whether Jean Mensa must go, he replied without hesitation: “Yes. I think the three top leadership must all go. They have managed the Commission so badly.”
