The 2025 Ashanti Regional Inter-School and College Athletics Super Zonals took place on February 27 and 28 at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.

This year’s competition was electrifying and showcased pure talent, with 44 senior high schools from the Ashanti Region competing for supremacy.

After a successful event, Prempeh College successfully defended their title as the overall best in the boys’ category. With this latest win, they have now secured a total of five titles, solidifying their position as the third most successful school on the all-time winners’ list.

In the girls’ category, St. Louis achieved a historic three-peat by emerging as the overall best school for the third consecutive year.

The Super Zonals featured a variety of events, including track and field, sprints, and distance races, highlighting the region’s and the country’s finest young talent.

Speaking about their latest victory over several rivals, Very Rev. Lewis Asare, Headmaster of Prempeh College, expressed pride in his team’s achievement. He said, “Defending our title was not an easy feat, but this victory is a reward for the hard work, dedication, and teamwork of our students, coaches, and staff. We remain committed to excellence and will continue to push ourselves to stay at the top.”

A special moment of this year’s event came when 16-year-old Hayford Addai, a visual art student at Konongo Odumase Senior High School and a determined amputee athlete, led his team to an emphatic victory in the 4×200 meters relay, securing their place in the finals.

His performance drew loud cheers from the spectators as he powered through the last leg, proving that disability is not a hurdle to excellence in sports. His inspiring effort was rewarded by the organizers during the awards and trophies presentation.

Many young athletes left lasting memories with athletics lovers in Kumasi. Ernest Acheampong of Prempeh College won 3 gold medals, 1 silver, and 1 bronze, and also emerged as the Best Athlete in the track events and Overall Best Athlete in the boys’ category.

Alimatu Iddrisu of Aduman Senior High School dominated her events, winning gold in the 800m, 1500m, and 3000m. Alimatu also walked away as the Best Athlete in the girls’ category.

Fulera Sulemana of T. I. Amass Kumasi was named the Overall Best Athlete in the Super Zonals competition. She clocked 55.50 seconds to win the girls’ 400m final at the Ashanti Region Super Zonals. Fulera also won gold in the girls’ 100m event, becoming the fastest lady at the Super Zonals. She led her team to win medals in the 4x100m and 4x200m relay events.

Janet Konadu Dapaah of St. Louis SHS set a new record in the girls’ javelin event, throwing 2.76m. Janet broke the previous record, which had been set by Victoria Adu Anabel of Aduman SHS in 2019.

In addition, the 2025 Ashanti Region Super Zonals experienced an international touch. Brian Kimutayi, a distance runner from Kenya who attends school in Ghana at T.I. Amass, stunned spectators with a dominant performance in the 5000m race, announcing his presence in Ghana’s high school sports scene in emphatic fashion. Coming from Kenya, a country with a rich tradition in long-distance running, Kimutayi’s performance reflected his nation’s legacy.

Ghana’s fastest man, Joseph Paul Amoah, has a younger brother, Paul Amoah, who was the only Form 3 student on Prempeh College’s team and served as the general captain. Joseph Paul Amoah himself is a proud alumnus of Prempeh College.

Despite occasional moments of tension between students in the stands, the competitiveness of the athletes never waned, making the Ashanti Regional Super Zonals once again a spectacular display of raw talent and fierce competition.
