Ashanti Region: Military officer arrested over alleged illegal sale of firearms

A Warrant Officer Class II of the Ghana Armed Forces has been arrested in the Ashanti Region for allegedly attempting to sell high-powered firearms and ammunition to civilians, following an intelligence-led operation by the Ashanti South Police Intelligence Directorate (PID).

The suspect, identified as W.O. II David Kofi Brew of the 4th Battalion, Kumasi, was arrested on Tuesday, 16th December 2025, at about 2:30 pm at the Bekwai Shell Filling Station.

According to a situational report from the Ashanti South PID, the operation was led by the Regional Director, Assistant Superintendent of Police Princeton Peasah Darkwa, as part of ongoing efforts to dismantle networks supplying weapons to criminal elements in Obuasi and its surrounding communities.

Preliminary intelligence indicated that the military officer was allegedly involved in the illicit supply of firearms. Acting on this information, undercover operatives engaged the suspect on 15th December 2025, during which he arrived in a military vehicle with registration number 54 GA 92 to meet an agent.

During the engagement, the suspect reportedly indicated his capacity to supply a range of weapons, including M16 rifles, G3 rifles and pistols, quoting a price of GH¢80,000 for an M16 rifle.

On 16th December 2025, the suspect allegedly contacted the undercover agent to confirm that the weapons were ready for collection. He was subsequently arrested while attempting to hand over the firearms.

Items retrieved at the time of arrest included a TMM 22 assault rifle loaded with 99 rounds of ammunition and two 12-round magazines, as well as an Ash Taurus GX2 pistol with 100 rounds of ammunition and three 12-round magazines.

During interrogation, the suspect reportedly admitted to selling firearms to individuals within Obuasi and neighbouring areas.

He is currently in police custody assisting with investigations, while processes are underway to formally notify his military superiors.

Police say efforts are ongoing to identify and arrest other accomplices connected to the alleged arms trafficking network.
