The Ashanti New Patriotic Party (NPP) caucus in Parliament is calling for immediate government intervention following a series of destructive fires that have left businesses in the region devastated.

In a statement, the caucus expressed its deep concern after the most recent fire engulfed a building near Kumasi’s Old Central Market, destroying several shops and threatening the livelihoods of countless traders and business owners.

They extended “heartfelt sympathies” to those affected by the tragedy but also emphasised the urgent need for action to prevent further damage.

This fire is just the latest in a troubling series of incidents that have plagued the Ashanti Region in 2025. The caucus pointed out that, in February, a fire in Suame Magazine destroyed 25 spare parts shops and 34 vehicles, leading to massive financial losses.

Less than a month later, the Kwadaso Wood Market experienced two separate fires, with the January blaze “reducing dozens of shops and warehouses to ashes.

“March saw further devastation, with a fire at the Konongo Mining Stores wiping out multiple businesses, and just days ago, a large-scale fire struck Adum, one of Kumasi’s busiest commercial districts,” the statement reads.

These recurring fires have raised serious concerns, particularly regarding the Ghana National Fire Service’s (GNFS) preparedness to handle such large-scale disasters.

The caucus noted in its statement the “lack of modern firefighting equipment, inadequate water supply infrastructure, and insufficient personnel,” which have hindered the GNFS’s ability to respond effectively.

The Ashanti caucus has called on the Minister for the Interior to take swift action, urging a thorough investigation into the causes of these fires and the implementation of preventive measures.

“The government must prioritise equipping the Ghana National Fire Service with the necessary resources to respond to these disasters,” the statement read.

As the Ashanti Region serves as a critical economic hub, the caucus stressed that the region cannot continue to suffer these devastating fires without decisive action from the authorities.

“The people of Ashanti cannot afford to endure these repeated disasters without a concrete response from the government,” they added.

Reaffirming their solidarity with the affected communities, the caucus pledged to continue advocating for swift government intervention.

“We stand with those impacted by these fires and will not rest until effective measures are taken to protect lives and businesses in the Ashanti Region,” the statement concluded.
